Lion Air flight crew arrested on drugs charges.

In the last twelve months, five Lion Air pilots or stewardesses have been arrested, either in possession or under the influence of crystal methamphetamine.

Death Penalty for Drug Traffickers
A warm welcome for visitors at Indonesia’s airports

While Indonesia has tough penalties against all “recreational” drugs (not only “hard” drugs), there is currently no national system of regular or random drug testing for Indonesian pilots and flight crew, just health and performance checks every six months. However, the arrested pilots have had their licences revoked.

Some are calling for an immediate audit of Lion Air’s management. Such a review might expose a larger problem, such as overwork or involvement by a larger drug ring.

At this time, the airline in question prefers to only “cooperate” with the police, the National Narcotics Board (BNN) and the Department of Civil Aviation to prevent drug abuse amongst its staff.

Chris, meth-heads have a certain look: they have this sort of wierd hollowness around their eyes and the corners of their mouths. They get skinny, and have this wierd way of talking with their heads tilted back a bit.
Next time you’re out and about in Surabaya, have a look around you at the late teen and early 20s kids… go on, I dare you…

Meth is a Concentration and performance enhancer.

So is coffee, and that is legal because it doesn’t turn you into a maniac…

I have recently had close encounters with 2 bonek motorbike processions in recent days. The second one was broken up by police stopping anyone without a helmet, so then they started riding against the one-way traffic towards me. I think I have had enough excitement after those experiences and don’t need to go searching out junkies…

You won’t have to search very hard, mister.
I almost crashed into a becak yesterday. Bastard was going salah arah up the edge of the road and suddenly whipped out to cross the flow right in front of me. He was probably on meth, come to think of it… ;-)

    UPDATE:

The 5th person to be arrested admitted yesterday, “I took drugs because my wife left me”.

    BAHAHAHA!

At least Lion Air is doing better than the Lampung police force:

45 Lampung cops test positive for drugs

I wouldn’t have thought Lampung cops could blame long working hours or it being a high-stress job…

I think the bigger scandal here is the fact that Lion must be paying their pilots an absolute pittance. I mean, METH? They’re not Pengamen. The shame of it! A pilot should be on at least a smack or coke salary…

The curious new slogan at the bottom of Garuda tickets, poorly chosen considering the news discussed above:

    FLY-HI WITH GARUDA INDONESIA

  8. Chris says:

As a counter-point, this interesting development from Indonesia’s southern neighbour:

Flying doctor pilot sacked for failing drug test

    I quite like this part:

Chief executive Nino di Marco says it is unclear if those on board knew something was wrong.

Maybe the nurse and patients were too busy to notice the pilot was chasing spaceships?

  9. Chris says:

A Garuda Indonesia co-pilot has failed a drug test in Makassar. Source

While some may be unnerved, there is a positive: the random testing system is actually happening and is working.

One surprising aspect is that the co-pilot isn’t Indonesian; he’s Spanish.

What time is the next Lion Air feeding of helpless cows in Selawesi? Indonesia has to be the most entertaining country on God’s Green Earth. You just can’t make this stuff up….LOL!

  11. Chris says:

lomboksurfer would be referring to a recent incident when a Lion Air plane skidded off the runway after hitting 3 stray cows upon landing.

    I liked this bit:

Both the plane and the remains of the cows are still on the runway.

    Lion Air Gorontalo Cows

There are also pictures of the cows floating around, but I don’t think it would be edifying to post one here.
