How to choose accommodation near the airport, station or terminal.

Following a long journey, it is nice to know that there isn’t another one, to the hotel.

In Indonesia, this can be difficult when airports and bus terminals are typically located outside the city limits. (The author once lived near Jakarta Airport, which often proved very useful – no traffic jams, plus early departures and late arrivals were less difficult). But with the right information, it is possible.

With this in mind, below are links to hotels that are near the city’s airport, train station, bus terminal and/or ferry terminal.

– Mengwi Bus Terminal recently replaced Ubung as the home of long-distance buses to Java, Lombok and beyond. Sanglah Bus Terminal is the start point for the integrated bus/ferry/train journey between Bali and Surabaya.

– Gilimanuk (West Bali) is the town on the Bali side of the Java/Bali ferry terminal. Padangbai (East Bali) has the harbour for boats to Lombok and most speedboats to the the Gili Islands; many of the latter leave in the early morning, when seas are calm.

– Most executive class trains depart from Gambir Station; most business class trains depart from Pasar Senen Station.

– Bangsal is the ferry terminal on Lombok for the Gili Islands. Due to boat schedules and the large distance between Lombok Airport and Bangsal, we recommend a morning flight to Lombok Airport when travelling to the Gili Islands and an afternoon departure from Lombok Airport when travelling from the Gili Islands. – Visitors wanting to head straight to Borobudur Temple are recommended to book a hotel in Magelang, 42km nort-west of Yogyakarta.

– Cicaheum is the terminal for buses to Pangandaran, while Leuwi Panjang is the one for Bogor and Jakarta.

– The Primajasa Airport Bus between Jakarta Airport and Bandung departs from another place, in Batu Indah: directions to Cicaheum (10km) here. Being near an industrial area and a toll road, there are few accommodation options nearby.
