By train or bus?

Sometimes, passengers arriving at Jakarta Airport want to head straight to Bandung.

While travelling by train from Jakarta to Bandung is a relaxing and scenic journey, it is not always suitable, especially for those on a tight schedule.

As there is no rail-link between Jakarta Airport and Central Jakarta, visitors cannot accurately predict how long their 29km journey to Gambir Railway Station will take. Whether travelling by taxi or airport bus, the ride into the city can be affected by traffic, weather, roadworks, etc. They can miss the train or end up waiting hours at the station.

Cipularang Toll Road TrafficHaving said that, the toll road between Jakarta and Bandung (a.k.a. Cipularang) can also have huge traffic jams. It is often Jakarta residents travelling to/from Bandung for the weekend, around public holidays, etc.

So when should visitors take the bus and when the train?

There are two companies operating airport buses between Jakarta Airport and Bandung: X-Trans and Primajasa. Both are compared with the train below.

There is little difference in cost. The price of 1 train ticket covers travelling in both business and executive classes.

Train tickets can be booked online, up to 90 days in advance; airport bus tickets can only be purchased on the day, at the airport.

4. TOTAL TRAVEL TIME

In theory, taking the airport bus would be faster; Google Maps estimates the 175km journey would take 2 hours 14 minutes. However, there are certain realities on the ground that also need to be considered.

For example, buses travelling from Jakarta Airport to Bandung all use Jakarta’s inner-city toll road, so they can get stuck in the capital city’s infamous traffic jams on the way.

Furthermore, the toll road from Jakarta to Bandung often gets traffic jams on Friday nights, weekends, the afternoon/evening before public holidays, etc, mostly due to Jakartans travelling to Bandung.

Finally, Bandung also has its own traffic issues. Travelling from the bus terminus to your hotel might take a while, especially for Primajasa.

The airport bus operators have cleverly masked the issue by not advertising an estimated time of arrival in their schedules, only departure times.

Taking the train might make for a more relaxing journey, as long as the ride to Gambir Station is unaffected by traffic.

SUMMARY
If arriving at Jakarta Airport on a weekday afternoon or the day before public holidays, it may be easier to take the train. At other times, the airport bus may be more suitable.

What’ the best way to Bandung? Any domestic flight from Jakarta to Bandung? Appreciate website for flight booking

  3. Chris says:

There are no flights to Bandung from Jakarta’s main airport, Soekarno-Hatta (CGK). There is one flight per day from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLP), but it’s a small plane (Susi Air) with a 10kg baggage allowance.

Hi Chris! I would like to know what is the availability of hotels during this time of the year, December 23-26. Will there still be lot of available rooms if say, we just walk in to some hotels there? How about the price? We will just need a modest one with out it being overly pricey.
    Thanks

  5. Chris says:

    Hi Nyla,

Christmas/New Year is high season in Indonesia too.

Christmas and New Year are both public holidays in Indonesia.

We recommend pre-booking accommodation, especially in Bandung, Bali, Yogyakarta and other cities with many local tourists. For business-oriented cities like Jakarta, Balikpapan and Surabaya, hotel occupancy rates may be lower.

You can choose/book your own hotels at http://hotels.indonesiamatters.com/.

    hi chris,
if we would arrive at January 22nd (thursday) at 10pm at jakarta airport, what would be the best option to travel to bandung then? is it possible to travel at night or would you recommend a hotel in jakarta and take the train the next morning? thanks

  7. Chris says:

    Hi Hanna,

Officially, the Primajasa bus is still operating then, but it wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t.

I would get a good night’s sleep, then get a train the next day.

  8. hanna says:

Hi Chris, thanx for your answer. We changed the flight plan and will now arrive at friday 23rd at 3.45 PM at jakarta airport. do you recommend the train or the bus to bandung then? thanx again!

  9. Chris says:

    Hi Hanna,

Traffic on the road from Jakarta to Bandung on Friday afternoon/evenings often looks like this:

    especially during the wet season.

I would recommend taking the last train from Jakarta to Bandung, at 19:50. If you would like a quote, please send an enquiry.

  10. Graham says:

I am travelling from Jakarta to Bandung on Saturday 10th Jan at 2pm. Would I be able to get a train or bus around that time and what is the congestion by road like at that time

  11. Chris says:

    Hi Graham,

Assuming you are travelling from the centre of Jakarta (not the airport), it would be faster by train because:

    – It is the wet season and train travel times aren’t affected by rain

    – Bus terminals in Jakarta and Bandung are outside town, while the train stations (Gambir & Bandung) are in the centre of town.

  12. Graham says:

Thanks Chris. I will be at the airport. Can I get a taxi to the station and how often do trains run. I arrive Jakarta from Denpasar around 12:45.
    Thanks

  13. Chris says:

If you are coming from the airport, you can get a taxi or DAMRI airport bus to the train station.

Train timetable for Jakarta to Bandung

You might find it easier to take the airport bus from Jakarta Airport to Bandung.

  16. lizazamri says:

    Hi Chris,

I am planninga to travel to Bandung via Jakarta airport, on Sunday, ETA 10.10am. There will be 5 adults and 2 kids (4 yo & 2 yo). I have thought about taking the train in Gambir to Bandung because of the fantastic view. But i am a bit concerned as there are 2 little kids in our group and it might be a hassle to travel from airport to Gambir to Bandung..what with the luggages, strollers and wheelchair. what do you think? is taking the X-trans the best way to Bandung in this instance? or hire a care with driver? one company quoted Rp800k to pickup from airport CKG to Bandung. Your advise is highly appreciated.

  17. Chris says:

    Hi Caroline,

The first suitable train from Jakarta to Bandung is at 18:05; it will be dark and you won’t see any scenery.

So if scenery is your first priority, I recommend the airport bus because you will see some before sunset (around 18:00). There is still some nice scenery on the toll road.

  18. Chris says:

    Hi lizazamri,

    TRAIN TO BANDUNG
Good: Scenery, can walk around, station in Bandung is in the centre of the town
Bad: Station in Jakarta (Gambir) is upstairs, not direct to Bandung like airport bus

    AIRPORT BUS TO BANDUNG
Good: direct from Jakarta Airport, a little cheaper
Bad: bus terminal in Bandung is far from centre of town, can be stuck in traffic on the way

    CAR WITH DRIVER
    Good: Very convenient
Bad: where to meet at the airport, can be stuck in traffic and kids are stuck

I think the quote of Rp800 000 would be worthwhile for 7 people. I would reconfirm the car is suitable for 8 people + luggage, prams, wheelchair; the polite way is to ask about the make and model of the car/bus/van. A lot of cars/vans are suitable for 7-8 people, but not with lots of luggage.

  19. Amira says:

Hi, me and my friends will be arriving in Jkt on 30/4/15 at 9am and heading straight to Bandung. Should we take bus or train?
Also, we will head back to Jkt on 1/5/15. at which time would you think its the most convenient time for us to head back to Jkt and would it be by train or bus ?
Appreciate you kind advice, as this will be our first time experience !

    :)

  20. Chris says:

    Hi Amira,

Looking at the train schedule, I would recommend taking the bus because the first suitable train is at 13:10.

You can return to Jakarta by train any time and you would enjoy the scenery, so I would recommend the 14:30 train.

If you would like a quote, please send an enquiry.

  21. Amira says:

    Hi Chris !
Thanks for the suggestions. Will discuss among us and will defs send you enquiry when we make a decision :)

  22. Andy says:

    Hi Chris,

I was planning to go Bandung the adventure way i should say.Hop and go… no advance booking for train or accomodations in Bandung. I intent to take train from Jakarta( Gambir Station) to Bandung.
Any advise on the accoms in Bandung and the distance from the Station itself? Thank you in advance.

  23. Chris says:

    Hi Andy,

There is a link to hotels near Bandung Station here.

  24. Amira says:

    Hi Chris,

What about taking shuttle van from Jakarta to bandung ? Would you prefer this or bus ?

  25. Chris says:

    Hi Amira,

Shuttle van often needs to travel to many places in Jakarta first, to pick up the passengers. Bus only goes from the bus terminal. Bus is better.

  26. Amirul says:

    Hi Chris,

I would arrive on Sunday 19th April, 11.55am at CGK and plan to go to Bandung on the same day. What is your transportation suggestion?

    Many thanks.

  27. Chris says:

    Hi Amirul,

You could take the airport bus or the 15:30 train.

  28. cheryl says:

where is the x-trans, primajasa and train located at the airport? is it available in the airport? or is it just near the airport?

  29. Chris says:

    Hi Cheryl,

    X-TRANS
    – Terminal 1A Area keberangkatan (departure area)
    – Terminal 1B Area keberangkatan, depan Cafe Masilia. (departure area, in front of Cafe Masilia)
    – Terminal 1C Area keberangkatan, depan kanfor Airfast. (departure area, in front of Airfast – the office of an Indonesian airline )
    – Terminal 2F, Shelter Bus inter moda (there is a large area for just buses)
    – Terminal 3 (small low-cost carrier terminal)

    PRIMAJASA
    As above, but only Terminal 1B, 2F & 3.

    TRAIN
There is no train station, although one is under construction. The DAMRI airport bus to Gambir Station in Central Jakarta – for trains to Bandung – departs from the same places as Primajasa.
